OUR TEXTILE ARTWORK
From the depths of a collectors chest to your walls, what was once a hidden gem becomes something accessible to all. Find out a little bit more about our creative process.
A Unique Approach
The foundations of Clothsmith have always been about making beautiful and distinctive art accessible. For many, finding a special piece of art (that doesn’t cost the earth) can be a daunting process. We take great joy in being part of this journey by unearthing one of a kind textiles and transforming them into unique pieces of art.
We strive to give longevity to the fine craftmanship and artistry of textiles from the past and present by adapting them for the contemporary home using modern digital techniques. The use of high-resolution scanning and printing software enables us to replicate the detail of the original textiles in astounding detail (you really do have to look twice). Designs are then reworked and digitally enhanced to create unique and original pieces, the result being a collection of striking artwork that will sit comfortably in old and new homes alike.
Behind each piece of our textile artwork lies a story that goes back to the hands that skilfully made it. Whether it be an intricate silk Suzani, sewn by a bride as part of her dowry, or a delicate Ottoman embroidery, stitched as part of an elaborate trouser leg design, they all have unique stories that should be celebrated. Every piece in our collection carries a cultural history of the community from which it originates. Coming from all across the world, our textiles have one thing in common; they have caught our eye as being something special and belonging to the Clothsmith aesthetic.
The Finest Craftmanship
Our products are all British made with the finest materials and are designed and finished with the utmost care. Collaborating with textile collectors, skilled craftspeople and small businesses from around the world, we take great pride in fostering long lasting relationships, resulting in high levels of attention to detail and quality craftmanship.
Working with our expert framers, a great deal of time and thought goes into our framing to ensure that each piece shines. We select mouldings and mounts that are sympathetic to the piece, and frame colours are chosen to compliment the palette. To further give the impression that they are textiles not just prints, many of the pieces are float mounted onto linen, adding depth and texture. On certain prints, our framers skilfully hand cut around the shape of the textile, once again adding to the illusion that they are in fact textiles. This unique way of framing the art elevates them from being just a standard framed print.
